From Macro to Micro.

NBA · WNBA · Euroleague · Catalonia · El Clot. The same gap patterns appear at every scale. Empirical validation of the Method.

Three scales · one same logic

NBA · WNBA · Catalonia.

The Macro to Micro document is the comparative study that shows how the same gender gap patterns appear at three different scales: the NBA/WNBA in the United States, the Euroleague Women in Europe and grassroots basketball in Catalonia.

The aim of the research: to empirically validate that the Five Theories of the Barna Method are not a local phenomenon, but the description of a global structural pattern.

NBA vs WNBA · The pay gap

One of the largest in professional sport.

IndicatorNBAWNBARatio
Average salary$11,900,000$147,74580:1
Maximum salary$59,600,000$241,984246:1
Rookie 1st year~$1,000,000$76,53513:1

But the WNBA shows the potential of investment: +183% in valuation, +139% post-season audience, an annual TV deal worth $200M from 2026 (vs $50M previously). When investment happens, the invisible market is revealed.

Europe · Four models

What works and why.

CountryDominant modelInvestment
TurkeyCorporate (large groups)€5-10 M
ItalyCorporate sponsorship€2-5 M
FranceMunicipal + sponsorship€1-3 M
SpainMixed€1-3 M

The French model (Bourges, Basket Landes) disproves the demographic logic: cities with fewer than 70,000 inhabitants maintain European elite teams thanks to determined municipal support. Barcelona, with 1.6 million, should be able to operate with far greater ease.

Catalonia · The territorial paradox

The capital has the lowest conversion.

TerritoryPopulationWomen's teamsLF EndesaConversion
Barcelona1,600,00013400.75%
Mataró130,000~250~4%
Girona103,000~301~6.7%
La Seu d'Urgell12,000~8112.5%

The pattern is inversely proportional to population. Barcelona dilutes; La Seu concentrates. This is the empirical finding behind the Barna Method's "micro-municipality" hypothesis: the El Clot neighbourhood, with its community identity, operates as a municipality within the city.

What if...

Three scenarios.
Three figures. One decision.

The data above describes the current state. The question to ask is a different one: what happens if Barcelona corrects the pattern? Three scenarios with numbers derived from the territory's own figures.

01
If Barcelona matches La Seu d'Urgell's conversion rate

Barcelona has 134 women's youth teams, representing approximately ~1,600 players. Today, only 0.75% reach national level: ~12 talents/year. If BCN matched La Seu d'Urgell's rate (12.5%), we would be talking about ~200 talents/year.

~12
talents identified today
0.75% conversion
~200
potential annual talent
12.5% conversion (La Seu)
~188
talents lost/year
structural differential
~940
talents over 5 years
not retroactively recoverable

The difference is not one of talent: it is one of architecture. The question is how many names of professional players we could be reading in the media today if Barcelona had operated like La Seu over the last decade.

02
If all BCN clubs apply the Grup Barna's 50% parity

The CB Grup Barna study analyses 17 Barcelona clubs. All have male presidents; the sector's average technical parity is 35%. The Grup Barna has 38 active coaches (65.5% of staff). If the remaining 16 clubs applied the same model, the numbers change:

38
current coaches at Barna
65.5% of technical staff
+16
new positions per club
vs current sector average
~256
new women's positions in BCN
if 16 clubs applied the model
+300
women leading within 5 years
counting generational turnover

This is the first invisible dividend of the Barna Method: every new female coaching staff member trained becomes a role model for the players she coaches. Technical parity is not an expense: it is the cultural infrastructure of the next generation.

03
If the IBE promotes the Barna model · a 5-year projection

The French case has proven it: cities such as Bourges (66,000 inhabitants) maintain European elite teams thanks to sustained municipal support, with budgets of €1-3 million per year. If Barcelona adopts the Barna Method as a reference framework through the Institut Barcelona Esports, the realistic 5-year scenario is:

0 → 3
LF Endesa teams in BCN
today: none · 5 years: 3-4
0.75 → 4%
talent conversion
Mataró/Girona level
~52
extra talents/year
vs ~12 today
~260
players recovered
accumulated over 5 years

Unlike one-off measures, the model is replicable, measurable and transferable: 60 years of empirical evidence in El Clot have already validated it. For the IBE, it is not a new expense; it is a proven execution template that can be encouraged through public tenders, grant criteria and institutional recognition.

“Barcelona does not need to invent anything new. It needs to choose between continuing to lose ~190 talents a year or making use of a model that has already worked in El Clot for six decades.”

Executive conclusion · CB Grup Barna 2026

Methodological note. The three scenarios are conservative projections derived exclusively from the figures cited on this same page (134 teams in BCN, 0.75% current conversion, 12.5% La Seu, 38 coaches at Barna, 17 clubs analysed, European cases). An average of 12 players/team and a current sector technical parity rate of 35% are assumed. The 5-year projections factor in natural generational turnover but not external multiplier effects.
