Productive Authenticity.
Organisations that practise their values generate an organic response that outperforms any planned strategy. 53.7% female audience, with no campaign at all.
The 53.7%: the anomaly that points to a new theory.
53.7% of CB Grup Barna's social media audience are women. In grassroots basketball, where digital audiences are usually 60-70% male, this is a statistical anomaly. And anomalies are where science finds new theories.
Three explanatory hypotheses:
- H1Structural hypothesis: 50% of the teams are women's teams, so the visual content naturally reflects parity.
- H2Community hypothesis: with 20 women's teams, the number of mothers, sisters and friends is proportionally higher.
- H3Authenticity hypothesis: women detect that the club practises equality rather than communicating it.
«We don't look for them. They find us.»
The Productive Authenticity Theory in six wordsThe Productive Authenticity Theory.
Organisations that practise their values (rather than communicating them) generate an organic response that outperforms any planned strategy. Three implications:
Instead of investing in equality campaigns, clubs should invest in equality. Communication is the by-product, not the product.
A club with verifiable equality (50%, 65.5%, 53.7%) offers a brand narrative more valuable than a club with a purple ribbon. The Method is a brand asset in its own right.
80% of clubs run symbolic actions because they have no substance to do anything else. The Barna Method turns every day of the year into an operational 8 March. 8 March is not a campaign: it is the annual proof that the system works.
Build the system · the target defines itself.
This theory challenges the logic of sports marketing ("define the target, design the message, measure the impact") and proposes an alternative: "build the system, and the target will define itself".
It is not a hypothesis: it is an empirical statement. The 53.7% female audience was neither sought nor planned. It was generated by the system.
What the sports marketing industry sells as "building community" is, in reality, building an authentic system and letting the community reveal itself.
