The Ainhoa Effect.

A player who returned to the neighbourhood when professional basketball let her go. And who, from there, returned to professional basketball. This is the story of CB Grup Barna.

Ainhoa López Rodríguez is the first official ambassador of CB Grup Barna. A professional player in the Liga Femenina Endesa (LFE), an international with the Spanish National Team at youth level, and an absolute example of what sporting perseverance means.

Her career was interrupted by an autoimmune disease that forced her to stop competing when she was at her peak. Months of uncertainty. Recovery. And a comeback few believed possible.

She returned to basketball through CB Grup Barna. For her neighbourhood. For the club that had trained her. Today she holds a Cum Laude degree from UB-INEFC and combines her professional career with training the new generations of players from El Clot.

The story

When basketball let her go,
the neighbourhood did not.

Ainhoa started playing at CB Grup Barna as a young girl. She went through every youth category. She stood out. She was called up by the Spanish National Team. She reached the Liga Femenina Endesa. The perfect story of local talent reaching the elite.

But then illness struck. An autoimmune disease that stopped her at the peak of her career. A professional halt. Months of uncertainty. Diagnosis, treatment, recovery. The fear of never competing again.

"I came back to the neighbourhood to recover. And the neighbourhood gave me basketball back."

Ainhoa López Rodríguez · Ambassador of CB Grup Barna

CB Grup Barna opened its doors to her. Not as a professional player. As Ainhoa, the girl who had grown up in the sports hall. She recovered by training alongside the club's players. Mentoring the youngest ones. Reconnecting with basketball from a different place.

Today she competes professionally again. And she does it from a unique position: an elite player training in the neighbourhood where she started. An ambassador who is not just a visible face: she is a real link between the elite and the grassroots.

Why it matters

The role model that was missing.

CB Grup Barna's Unified Report identifies one of the structural problems of Catalan women's basketball: the lack of close-to-home role models. Girls who start playing have no models to identify with in their own neighbourhood. They watch the WNBA on television, but their own sports hall has no visible example of "a player from my neighbourhood who made it".

Ainhoa breaks that logic. She is here. She is from here. She reached the elite. She came back.

Her story is multi-dimensional: sporting success, overcoming illness, academic achievement (Cum Laude), community commitment. A story that goes beyond statistics. A story that gives meaning to the club's motto: "Equality is not legislated. It is built, from the ground up, from a neighbourhood."
