Full Report.

The exhaustive analysis of basketball in Barcelona: 17 clubs, federation data, international comparison and modelling of the cost of the leap to national level.

Exhaustive analysis

Basketball in Barcelona · 2024-2026.

The Full Report is the expanded version of the document presented to the City Council. It includes:

  • Club-by-club analysis of the 17 Barcelona clubs, with data on budget, teams, governance and conversion.
  • International comparison with Madrid, Valencia, Paris, Bourges (France) and the Italian model.
  • Economic modelling of the cost of the leap to LF2 (€80,000-€120,000/team) and the ROI of investing in parity.
  • Analysis of Sport's 8M: 80% of clubs remain at symbolic actions with no structural policies.
  • Future lines of research and a protocol for longitudinal studies of player cohorts.
The Madrid vs Barcelona case

The differentiating factor: institutional support.

Total FEB leagues21~11

Madrid operates with a model of depth: 3,012 federated teams and 21 teams in FEB leagues. Barcelona, with an equivalent base, has half the presence in national competitions. The differentiating factor is neither talent nor population: it is strategic institutional support.

Conclusion of the report

It is not a talent deficit.

The gender gap in Barcelona basketball is not a talent deficit, but a failure in the architectural design of the system. Three elements converge:

  • The lack of a bridge category (LF2) in the city.
  • Saturated facilities with a scheduling allocation hostile to women's basketball.
  • A governance structure that does not invest equitably.

Institutional support is the key variable that differentiates the successful models (Girona, Madrid, Bourges) from the stagnant ones (Barcelona city).
