The Barna,
with data
The three club studies merged into a single document: why we develop players the way we do (the scientific evidence), who has done it before and how they describe it (Marc Gasol), and exactly where we stand against everyone else (digital community and federated structure, club by club).
Six conclusions that hold up the whole document
- Development first is not ideology: it is what the evidence says. Enjoyment predicts staying in sport (r = 0.45) almost three times better than competitive performance (r = 0.18), and 92.8% of those who stand out at junior level are not those who stand out as seniors. A club that retains players by winning is using the weakest lever there is.
- The model has a famous, documented precedent. Marc Gasol founded a school in 2014 —not a team— and did not create his first senior side until 2017. Thirteen verified public items, from 2014 to 2026, sustain his doctrine: «We start with the utmost humility, with commitment, effort and a methodology of our own» and «We are not going to rush to reach the ACB».
- The Barna is the third largest development structure in its comparable field. 32 teams federated with the FCBQ in 2026-27 (28 youth + 4 senior). Only Boet Mataró (42) and UE Mataró (37) register more — and of the three, the Barna is the only one without a team in the FEB categories.
- The leading development club in the city of Barcelona for digital community. 7,096 followers, 6th of 22 verified Catalan and Spanish development clubs. The five ahead are all from the metropolitan area, not from the city.
- Where others need two or three organisations, the Barna does it with one. Barça, Girona, Manresa, Sant Adrià, Cornellà and L'Hospitalet split men's, women's and youth basketball across separate legal entities and accounts. The Barna covers everything under a single brand: for a sponsor, a single point of entry to the whole community.
- The ceiling is not the structure, it is the conversion. 222 followers per federated team, against Sant Adrià's 532 or Almeda's 455. The structure is already built; what is missing is editorial identity.
The executive summary, in full
Full reproduction of the Executive summary of the state of the art (Ana Fernández Durán, August 2026), the only document from the research attached in this session.
A doctoral-level review
A summary of a doctoral-level literature review on the youth basketball club: eleven parallel lines of research, more than 900 searches of academic search engines, institutional repositories, bibliographic APIs and primary federation, legal and government sources. The full report runs to ~61,000 words and eighteen chapters.
It covers the psychology of the young athlete, dropout, talent development, maturation and health, parents and coaches, child protection, the sociology of the club, international models, management and governance, sport theory, gender and feminism, and the economics of basketball clubs. It includes a map of Catalan basketball and a chapter applied to CB Grup Barna.
Its distinctive feature is traceability. Every reference carries a verification mark, and Annex III lists exhaustively what could not be verified — including five widely circulated figures in the sector that must not be cited.
The fifteen findings that matter most
On dropout
Dropout concentrates at 12–14, not at 11
Real mean age: 12.93. It coincides exactly with the under-14 → under-16 transition in Spanish youth basketball.
Enjoyment is the dominant predictor of persistence
Sporting competence is one of the weakest (r = 0.18). A club that retains players through performance is using the weakest lever there is.
What retains players is not pressure but presence
Basketball players report the highest levels of negative parental behaviour of any sport analysed. And what retains them: 86% parental attendance at games among current players against 58% among former players.
It is not a loss of interest: it is environmental expulsion
70% of Catalan girls quit on reaching adolescence, but 59% of those who quit still enjoy competitive sport.
On talent
Early identification does not work
92.8% of the junior and senior elite populations are different people.
Relative age selects but does not predict performance
In Spain it is extreme: 50.3% born in the first quarter and 6.8% in the fourth in the regional selections (n = 1,368).
Maturation predicts the physical, not the technical
Biological maturation predicts power, speed and agility, but not technical skill. Selecting on physique at U12–U15 is, to a large extent, selecting on biological date of birth.
On health and club culture
Ten minutes of neuromuscular warm-up
2–3 times a week cut ankle and knee injuries in youth basketball by 36% — with an equivalent effect with and without external supervision.
The serious problems come from the best
The sport ethic of Hughes and Coakley explains harm through overconformity: the player who hides pain is not breaking the club's culture, he is embodying it. Burnout is a problem of the club's social organisation, not a personal failing of the player.
Violence and positive experience coexist
78.1% of the Spanish respondents in the European CASES project reported interpersonal violence within sport before the age of 18 (69.4% psychological) — and 85% simultaneously reported positive experiences. Both figures coexist.
On the economics
The cost ladder of promotion is discontinuous
×5 at the first step into the national tier, ×2–3 at each rung after that. The first one —the one a neighbourhood club takes— is the most brutal in relative terms. From Tercera to Primera FEB, the fee is multiplied by 36 and the bond by almost 19.
The adjustment is made in the youth section and the women's section
Força Lleida, 2024: promotion of the men's team to the ACB was financed, among other things, by withdrawing the women's team from Liga Femenina 2. Betis / Baloncesto Sevilla, 2023: €2.6m cut by eliminating two youth teams and the under-12 and under-10 age groups — and even so, insolvency proceedings in 2026 and the club's disappearance.
The FEB devotes 0.61% of its budget to development
€193,762 against more than €8 million to elite competition.
On gender and management
Equal access does not produce equal power
Title IX multiplied the number of US high-school female players ninefold and cut women coaches from 90% to 40%. In Catalonia, male presidencies of sports clubs have been stuck at 88% for six years while women's licences grow.
The dominant constraint is not money: it is the board
Three independent sources place it above funding as a perceived problem, and ~84% of the economic value of Catalan sports volunteering falls on the boards.
The best documented cost-impact ratio
Three independent lines converge with it: the coach is the dimension that most predicts retention in Spanish sports centres; the caring/transformational climate outperforms every other predictor of youth outcomes (r = 0.43, across 177 studies); and in the SPLISS model, the pillar that sets Serbia and Lithuania apart is not funding but coach education.
A necessary caveat: a four-month Spanish study cut punitive behaviour by more than half without improving the climate as perceived by the players, and two systematic reviews note that institutional maintenance is almost never documented. Training once is not enough: it has to be recurrent and the climate has to be measured as the players perceive it, not by coach attendance.
The ten recommended moves
| # | Move | Cost | Evidence of impact |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Recurrent relational training for coaches | Very low | Dropout 5% vs. 26% |
| 2 | 10 min of neuromuscular warm-up, 2–3×/week | Zero | −36% ankle and knee injuries |
| 3 | The club's own retention curve by cohort and sex | Zero | Produces the figure not even the FEB has |
| 4 | Audit of date of birth and maturation | Very low | Corrects the 50.3% / 6.8% bias |
| 5 | A written promotion policy with a financial threshold and a no-cannibalisation clause | Zero | Prevents the Força Lleida and Betis cases |
| 6 | A gender audit in five measurable questions | Zero | Complies with Law 39/2022; tackles the 70% female dropout |
| 7 | Measuring enjoyment and motivational climate 2×/season | Low | The two best predictors of retention |
| 8 | Full and visible LOPIVI compliance | Low | A legal obligation since 2021 |
| 9 | Sporting activity for mothers and fathers | Low | A stronger equalising lever than a bursary |
| 10 | An institutional case with an explicit theory of change | Zero | Turns the annual report into a funding instrument |
Eight of the ten cost nothing or next to nothing. None requires promotion to a higher category. And none depends on winning.
What can be stated before the Board, the District and sponsors
What can be stated
- TEAM sport behaves in the opposite way to individual sport with regard to adolescent mental health: −10% in anxiety/depression, −19% in depressive symptoms with withdrawal and −20% in rule-breaking behaviour in girls, against +16% anxiety/depression in individual sport (n = 11,235). It is the most specific argument available to a basketball club.
- The social value of an active child is almost double that of an active adult: £4,300/year (ages 11–16) against £2,600.
- A volunteer generates more than twice the social value per head of a participant (£2,663 against £1,274).
- The social return of sport has a methodologically published measure: SROI of 1.91 (2019), 3.28 (2020) and 4.38 (2025) per pound invested.
- The fabric of clubs is inherited capital and is not reproducible. A club with sixty-one years of history in the Clot is not an interchangeable service provider.
- In Sant Martí the income gap between neighbourhoods of the same district is almost 3:1 (Vila Olímpica +41% on the Barcelona average; el Besòs i el Maresme −63%). Fees, equipment and travel are not administrative details: they are the barrier.
- Basketball is the Spanish team sport with the best gender trend: 36.1% women's licences in 2025, with female growth that in 2024 more than doubled the male figure.
What must not be stated
- That taking part in sport causes integration, better educational performance or better mental health. The designs are mostly cross-sectional and the effects small (10–20%).
- That sport improves grades. The effect on academic performance is mixed; the solid effect is on sustained attention behaviour in the classroom (d = 0.77) and on self-esteem. It is a better argument and it also happens to be true.
The defensible formulation is Coalter's: sport is a necessary but not sufficient condition. What produces the effects are the sustained social relationships and the complementary supports the club organises around the sport.
Five figures that circulate and must NOT be cited
The sentence that sums up the work
A tool. Not a miracle. What it produces depends entirely on how it is used — and that is, precisely, the responsibility and the opportunity of a development club.
The thesis, chapter by chapter
A map of the 133 pages and ~61,500 words of the full report, reconstructed from its own table of contents and from the working notes of the session in which it was produced. The full PDF is not attached in this session: to reproduce any chapter word for word, it just needs to be attached again.
Eleven lines of research, eighteen chapters, three annexes
- Psychology of the young athlete Motivation, motivational climate, self-determination; why enjoyment predicts persistence and performance does not.
- Dropout from sport The real age (12.93), the under-14→under-16 transition, the 30% annual dropout from at least one club, and the specific case of female dropout as environmental expulsion.
- Talent development Early identification (the 92.8%), the relative age effect (50.3%/6.8%), early specialisation and its alternatives.
- Maturation and health PHV (range 12.8–16.5 years in a preselected academy), injuries and the neuromuscular warm-up (−36%), training load.
- Parents and coaches Parental behaviour (basketball, the worst sport analysed), presence as retention (86% vs. 58%), and behavioural training for coaches (26%→5%).
- Child protection LOPIVI, the European CASES project (78.1% / 69.4% / 85%), the protection officer, club culture.
- Sociology of the club The club as inherited, non-reproducible social capital; volunteering (~84% of the value on boards); the board as the dominant constraint.
- International models The SPLISS model; why Serbia and Lithuania stand out for coach education and not for budget.
- Management and governance Professionalisation, theory of change, the annual report as a funding instrument.
- Sport theory Bourdieu (capital and field), Elias (the civilising process and sport), the sport ethic of Hughes and Coakley (overconformity), and Bronfenbrenner (the ecological model of development). The framework that explains why burnout is organisational and not individual.
- Feminism and gender From Ann Hall and Iris Marion Young to Messner and Theberge; gender-bland sexism; the obligations of Law 39/2022. The most usable part: Young translated into technical objectives on court — «the ball is coming for me», discontinuous unity in the shot, occupying space as a season objective.
Plus the cross-cutting chapters: chapter 11 devoted to Marc Gasol (Part III), the promotion dilemma (ch. 14), the map of Catalan basketball (ch. 15), the chapter applied to CB Grup Barna, the 12-chapter editorial series (§17.12) with the table of which evidence backs each piece, and the three annexes.
The promotion dilemma
With the official FEB and ACB figures: the discontinuous cost ladder (×5 at the first national step; from Tercera to Primera FEB the fee ×36 and the bond ×19) and the two documented cases that are precisely the club's thesis:
- Força Lleida, 2024. Promotion of the men's team to the ACB was financed, among other things, by withdrawing the women's team from Liga Femenina 2.
- Betis / Baloncesto Sevilla, 2023. It cut €2.6m by eliminating two youth teams and the under-12 and under-10 age groups — and still ended up in insolvency proceedings in 2026 and the club disappeared.
The chapter's operational conclusion: the written promotion policy with a financial threshold and a no-cannibalisation clause (move no. 5) exists so that this cannot happen to the Barna.
The map of Catalan basketball
The national-level clubs were fully verified; the regional ones only partly, because the FCBQ website blocked automated access with a captcha. The chapter's most striking figure: there is not a single Catalan club in Primera FEB.
This line was completed later with the report «Piràmide CB Grup Barna» (13/08/2026, from basquetcatala.cat club pages): 33 federated Barna teams against the 23 youth teams of the Fundació Bàsquet Girona, the 40 of Boet Mataró (without a women's senior B) and the 24 of Santfeliuenc — with the Barna the only one of the four with two senior teams (A+B) in both genders within the same organisation.
What the research leaves flagged as pending
Annex III, besides the five prohibited figures (Part I·6), leaves three matters open that can be settled with a phone call, not with more research:
- The exact category of the CBGB this season (settled later: both senior A teams in the FCBQ Super Copa, confirmed by El Clotenc and the federated calendar).
- The FCBQ's fees (the public website blocks automated access).
- The applicable grant calls (the public domains block automated access).
Marc Gasol: everything located
Chapter 11 of the thesis —the twenty cores of his discourse and the twelve principles paired with the evidence— lives in the full PDF, which is not attached. What follows is the complete catalogue of Marc Gasol's interviews, statements and public items about player development located and independently verified during this session, in chronological order, with their verbatim quotes.
Interviews and statements, 2014–2026
«Marc Gasol founds a school club in Girona»
Launch of the Club Escola de Bàsquet Marc Gasol alongside the mayor of Girona, Carles Puigdemont. The school is created to develop players «in sporting, academic and personal terms».
feb.es/2014/5/20 · article 54065 · also covered by the FCBQ (articles 4280 and 4284, basquetcatala.cat)
«Bàsquet Girona: a team, a youth system, a city… and Marc Gasol»
The feature that sets out the project's three guiding principles —effort, commitment and methodology— and their order: the youth system as starting point and foundation, the elite as the goal «but without rushing». That same year the club created its first senior team (EBA, coached by Quim Costa): three seasons after the school, not before.
«Marc Gasol sets an example in Girona»
A piece on his personal involvement with the club and the city while he was still playing in the NBA (the championship season with Toronto).
«What matters is inspiring young people to be good people»
A statement after the 2019 World Cup in China — the most quoted formulation of his philosophy: sport as the vehicle, the person as the end.
Marc Gasol on his own development as a player
An in-depth interview about his formative years (Barça, Lausanne, Girona) and how they shaped his understanding of how a young player develops.
He returns from the NBA to play for his own club, in LEB Oro
After 13 NBA seasons and two championship rings, he decides not to retire: he signs as a player for the club he founded and presides over, in Spain's second division. The opposite of the usual move: the star drops down to the project's level, not the other way round.
«We are not going to rush to reach the ACB»
The line that defines the project's doctrine weeks before, precisely, winning promotion: the pace is set by the club's solidity, not by the urgency of the result. That same year he had launched the 3x3 section (2021) and then the women's 3x3, described as «one of the main lines of growth».
He wins promotion to the ACB as player, owner and president
The LEB Oro playoff final: Bàsquet Girona 66 – Estudiantes 60, with Gasol on court (11 points, 8 rebounds, 4 steals, 2 blocks; averaging 14.5 points and 8.2 rebounds over the season). Eight years after founding the school, the first team reaches the top tier.

Executive summary of the state of the art · CB Grup Barna, August 2026
The Gasol model in five ideas, all sourced
- The school first, the team afterwards. He founds the school in 2014; the first senior team does not arrive until 2017 (EBA). Three years of youth work before a single senior side. (FEB 2014 and 2017; Esport3)
- Three principles, not a slogan: effort, commitment and methodology — a methodology «of our own», shared across every age group. (FEB 2014, 2017; the club's lecture at the UdG with Jesús Escosa and Marc Pena)
- No rush, even when winning: «We are not going to rush to reach the ACB» — said weeks before winning promotion. The pace is set by solidity, not by the result. (HoyMagazine 2022)
- The person before the sport: «Basketball is not as important as the message we can send to the younger generations to inspire them to be good people.» (El Desmarque, 2019)
- Sport as an educational tool: «L'esport és una eina per educar» — the formulation the Barna's research chose to sum up the whole piece of work. (CBGB thesis, 2026)
It is, point by point, the same order CB Grup Barna defends in its projecte esportiu — with the measurable difference that the Barna has been doing it for sixty-one years and keeps youth and senior basketball within the same organisation.
The Barna in the table: the community
Research by the Marketing Department, 2nd edition, closing 16 August 2026: 92 Instagram accounts verified profile by profile. Where the club's digital community stands against real development clubs.

The map of legal entities: exactly who you are comparing against
Several famous names in Catalan basketball are not one club: they are two or three federated entities with separate accounts. Adding their figures together —or comparing against the wrong one— is the quickest way to inflate or sink a ranking.

Diagnosis, objectives and the case
What the data proves, what it does not prove, and what can be said with it in front of a Board, the District or a sponsor without exaggerating a single figure.
Four honest readings
What the data proves
That the club communicates above its sporting category and in line with the real size of its structure. That the brand —neighbourhood, development, women's basketball, values— generates attachment without needing an FEB senior side to tow the audience along. And that the argument is twofold: community and structure, both verifiable in public sources.
What the data does NOT prove
Neither reach, nor engagement, nor commercial value equivalent to a professional club. UEM and Prat have federation television and FEB gate receipts; Sant Adrià has a women's story of a purity a mixed account cannot replicate. Community size is one variable, not the whole picture.
The internal anomaly
32 federated teams and around 450 families sustain 7,096 followers: 222 per team. The specialists convert at twice that rate (Sant Adrià, 532; Almeda, 455). The ceiling is not set by the market or by the structure —it is the third largest in the field compared— it is set by the conversion of identity into audience.
The advantage not yet used
Those ahead are ahead by one of two routes: an FEB senior side (UEM, Prat, Cornellà) or niche purity (Sant Adrià, Almeda). The Barna has a third route nobody in the group occupies: being the medium of youth basketball —tactics, health, families, coaches— from the single account of a club that does all of it.
The 2026/27 ladder
| Milestone | Objective | Gap | What it unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operation 7,500 | 7.500 | 404 | Overtake Cornellà and Prat. A quarterly objective. |
| Operation 7,800 | 7.800 | 704 | Overtake Almeda: leader of the southern belt. |
| Women's development leadership | 8.600 | 1.504 | Overtake Sant Adrià. |
| Operation Mataró | 9.300 | 2.204 | Overtake UEM: outright 1st in the development benchmark. |
| A change of scale | 10.000 | 2.904 | Ahead of every comparable club in LF Challenge and LF2. |
The sentence for the sponsorship pack
To that sentence, the block of evidence in Parts I to III adds the why: it is not only that the club is big, it is that the way it develops players —enjoyment before results, no early cuts, with a complete pathway— is the one the research supports and the one a project like Marc Gasol's chose when it could have chosen any other.
The discrepancies between sources, and which one prevails
This report merges three studies carried out on different dates and with different criteria. Some figures do not match between them. Hiding that would make the document useless to anyone who checks: this is what differs and what has been adopted.
| Figure | «Piràmide» 13/08 | «In the table» 16/08 | Criterion adopted |
|---|---|---|---|
| CB Grup Barna teams | 33 | 32 | 32 — the more recent count, with an explicit youth/senior breakdown |
| CB Boet Maresme Mataró | 40 | 42 | 42 — same reason |
| Bàsquet Girona's youth section | 23 | 24 | 24 — same reason |
| CB Santfeliuenc | 24 | 24 | They match |
Other corrections already incorporated
- UE Mataró: no figure in the 1st edition of the benchmark → 9,225 verified. It changes the leadership of the development ranking and moves the Barna from 5th to 6th.
- Barça CBS Femení: omitted in the 1st edition → 18,400. The Barna goes from 3rd to 4th in LF Challenge.
- L'Hospitalet's women's account: the account @celhospitaletfemeni (2,952) belongs to CE L'Hospitalet football. The basketball one is @ce_joventut_lhospitalet (513).
- Uni Girona: no longer an independent club; its LF Endesa licence sits under CB Girona 2014 SAD.
- «Marta Zori renews with Grup Barna» (FEB.es): it appeared in an external press round-up. It could not be verified by any route and is not used in this report or on the club's website.
