What we mean by "grassroots and competitive club"

It's not a slogan: it's how the Catalan Basketball Federation (FCBQ) itself organises competition. Every category has several tiers — 1r any for players in their first year in it, Preferent or Interterritorial for those already a year in, and Promoció for anyone who wants to keep playing without the pressure of the top tier. A "grassroots" club is one that uses that whole ladder. A "competitive" club is one that also reaches the top rung. Barna does both at once, and the federation's own data makes the case better than any tagline could.

The club's official record on basquetcatala.cat shows over 34+ teams, from Pre-Mini (age 8-9) up to Senior, with parallel boys' and girls' structures and, in most categories, up to three levels: an A team at the competitive ceiling (Interterritorial, or Preferent where no Interterritorial tier exists), a B team made up of players in their first year in the category, and often a third, developmental team. Both senior sides — men's and women's — field a first team and a reserve, and both first teams compete in Súper Copa FCBQ, the top Catalan territorial category.

So what do Catalan basketball's giants actually have?

Here's the surprising part: among clubs whose first team plays in Liga ACB or Liga Femenina Endesa, the usual pattern is that the youth academy and the senior first team are not the same entity.

• FC Barcelona — 10 federated teams in Catalonia, all boys', from Mini to Júnior, with no Pre-Mini age group. And no women's team at all: Barça's women's basketball project (Barça CBS, run in partnership with CB Santfeliuenc) shut down at the end of the 2024-25 season for financial reasons, after having played in Liga F Endesa. Their men's reserve side plays Copa Catalunya, not Súper Copa; the first team plays Liga ACB.
• Joventut Badalona — Catalonia's biggest youth academy: 53 teams, from Pre-Mini to Júnior, across both genders. But no senior team of its own within this entity: whoever reaches the top leaves the club.
• Bàsquet Manresa — in effect two separate clubs by gender: a boys' academy (17 teams, no senior side) and Manresa CBF, a separate women's entity with a senior team in Liga Femenina 2, Spain's national league.
• Fundació Bàsquet Girona — 23 teams, from Pre-Mini to Júnior, across both genders, chaired by Marc Gasol. No senior team of its own either: the first team plays in Liga Endesa, outside this record.

It's a logical pattern for clubs that feed the professional elite: the academy trains, and whoever reaches the very top usually moves on to a separate professional structure. It makes sense for them. It isn't, however, the only way to grow.

At the big clubs, the academy and the first team are almost never the same entity. At Barna, they are: the same player who joins the Escoleta at four years old can end up playing Súper Copa without ever changing shirts.

What sets us apart

Of the clubs reviewed here, Grup Barna is the only one with two senior teams — first and reserve — in both genders at once, inside the same entity that runs the whole academy pyramid, both competing in Súper Copa FCBQ. Neither Barça, nor Joventut, nor Manresa, nor Girona have it this integrated. We're not the club with the most teams in Catalonia — Joventut has 53 — nor the most famous. What we are is one of the few clubs where training and competing at the highest level happen inside the very same club, without ever breaking the thread.
