Guide for families

What age can a child start playing basketball?

It's the question families in the neighborhood ask us most. The short answer: age four. The long answer has nuances, and it's worth knowing them before signing anyone up anywhere.

The short answer: age 4

A child can start playing basketball at four years old, though not the sport we watch on television. At this age what's being developed is motor skills: running and stopping, jumping, throwing, catching, coordinating with someone else. The ball is the excuse, and a great one, because dribbling forces you to control your body and your eyes at the same time.

That's why clubs don't have them compete. They have them play. At the CB Grup Barna Escoleta, for example, the groups run from ages 4 to 8, are mixed and split by age, and the calendar isn't league matches but get-togethers with other clubs.

The ages, category by category

This is the usual path in Catalan basketball. The ages are a guide: what matters is the birth year, not the school year.

  • 4 to 8 years · Escoleta or basketball school — introduction. No federated competition. Mixed teams.
  • 8 and 9 years · Premini — first competition, still very much about development.
  • 10 and 11 years · Mini — minibasket: lower hoop and smaller ball.
  • 12 and 13 years · Pre-youth and youth — the move to adult dimensions.
  • 14 and 15 years · Cadet — the stage where the game becomes recognisable.
  • 16 and 17 years · Junior — the last development category.
  • From 18 · Sub-22 and senior — adult competition.

What if they start later?

It happens all the time and it's no problem at all. A child who arrives at ten or twelve without ever having touched a ball joins their category by age, not by skill level, and catches up within a season. Youth basketball isn't a funnel: no neighborhood club worth its salt turns anyone away for starting late.

What does change is the reason they join. At four, they sign up because their parents see it as an activity; at twelve, they sign up because they themselves want to. The second motivation tends to last longer.

The best time to start is when the child feels like it. Everything else —age, category, level— is something the club sorts out.

How to know if they'll like it

You can't know from home. That's why almost every club allows a no-commitment trial session: you go along one day, do the full session with the group they'd join, and decide afterwards. It's the only honest way to find out, and it costs nothing.

If you're in Barcelona and want to give it a try, the Barna Escoleta is run by Julio Torralba, and you can book a day directly with him at 646 205 526.

Frequently asked questions

What age can a child start playing basketball?

From age 4, a child can start at an introductory school or escoleta, working on motor skills and coordination with a ball, without federated competition. Competition begins at age 8, in premini.

What is the minibasket age range?

Minibasket is for children aged 10 and 11. It's played with a lower hoop and a smaller ball than the adult versions. Before that comes premini, at ages 8 and 9.

Is it too late to start playing basketball at age 12?

No. A player who starts at age 12 joins the category that matches their birth year and catches up within a season. At grassroots clubs, entry doesn't depend on ability.

Do boys and girls train together?

At introductory ages (4 to 8) teams are usually mixed. From federated competition onward they are split into men's and women's categories.
