Inside the club

How many teams does the Barna have? The federation counts 32, and 38 train

Both figures are true. The difference is not a counting error: it is six teams the Catalan Basketball Federation does not register, and which train every week just the same at the Nau del Clot.

If you look CB Grup Barna up on basquetcatala.cat, the official page will tell you thirty-two teams. If you come to the Nau on a Tuesday afternoon and count them, you get thirty-eight. Neither figure is wrong: they count different things.

It is worth explaining, because the difference says quite a lot about what the club is like.

The thirty-two that appear on the page

These are the teams with a Catalan Basketball Federation licence, the ones that play official league basketball every weekend. They run from under-10 to senior, with up to three levels per age group —A, B and Negre— and break down into seventeen boys' and fifteen girls' teams.

The 32 federated teams, by age group

A complete structure from under-10 to senior, with a boys' and a girls' line at every age but one. The under-12 age group has only a girls' team this season.

The six that do not appear

This is where the page falls short. There are six teams training at the club, with a coach, a timetable and an allocated court, that appear nowhere in the Catalan Federation's register. For three different reasons.

What the federation page counts and what it does not

In red, the part of the club the Catalan Basketball Federation's register does not cover.

32 federated with the FCBQ6 outside the register

Three Escoleta teams · not old enough

The Escoleta is for ages 4 to 8, and the Catalan Federation does not federate anyone before under-10, around the age of eight. That is its rule, not a club decision: before that age children play without a licence and without official competition. There are three teams, mixed, and none appears on any register —even though some children have been coming for three years.

The Barna Màgics · a different federation

The Barna Màgics are the club's inclusive basketball team. They train on the same court as everyone else and wear the same badge, but they are federated withACELL, the Catalan federation of sports for people with intellectual disabilities. Because that is not the FCBQ, the basketball page does not see them.

Two school league teams

Two more teams, also mixed, play in a school league at a school in the neighbourhood. It is real competition, with a fixture list and results, but outside the federated circuit.

Why we are explaining this

Because when a family looks at the official page to get a sense of the club, they see thirty-two teams and they do not see the Escoleta, or the Màgics, or the school league. And it turns out those three are, precisely, where a lot of people come in: the youngest, those who play with support and those who start at school.

The federation register does its job, which is to keep count of who plays official league basketball. But a club is not only that. The six teams that do not appear take up court time, have a coach and are what makes the Nau on a Tuesday afternoon look like what it is.

Thirty-two teams is what the federation says. Thirty-eight is what there is.

If you want to see the club's other figures —players, coaches and structure— we have them all together in the club's official data. And if what you are looking for is where to start, theEscoleta is precisely one of the six that do not appear on the page.

Frequently asked questions

How many teams does CB Grup Barna have?

Thirty-eight train at the club every week. Of these, 32 are federated with the Catalan Basketball Federation and appear on the official page: 17 boys' and 15 girls' teams, from under-10 to senior. The other six do not appear because the FCBQ does not federate them.

Why does the official page show fewer than the club has?

Because it only counts teams federated with the FCBQ. The three Escoleta teams are not yet old enough to be federated, the Barna Màgics are federated with ACELL and two teams play in a school league.

At what age does a team become federated?

At under-10 level, around the age of eight. It is the Catalan Basketball Federation's rule: before that age children play without a federation licence and without official competition. That is why the Escoleta teams, ages 4 to 8, do not appear on any page.

Are the Barna Màgics a club team?

Yes. They are CB Grup Barna's inclusive basketball team and they train on the same court as everyone else. They are federated with ACELL, the Catalan federation of sports for people with intellectual disabilities, and not the FCBQ: that is why they do not appear on the basketball page.
