Barna Màgics

CB Grup Barna's inclusive basketball team: players with intellectual disabilities training and competing like any other team in the club. It is not a one-off programme or a corporate social responsibility gesture: it is another section, with its own fixtures, coaching staff and official kit, and a reference point for inclusive sport in the neighbourhood.

Another team, not a programme

The Barna Màgics is CB Grup Barna's basketball team for people with intellectual disabilities. It trains on the same court as every other team, shares the hall and the changing rooms, competes on its own fixture list and appears on the same schedule as the under-16s or the senior team. The project runs together with the Fundació Mullor and with ACELL, the Catalan federation of sport for people with intellectual disabilities.

The distinction matters: it is not a parallel activity the club puts on as an extra, it is a team inside the structure, on equal terms with every other team in the club. That is why Barna has become a reference point for inclusion in the neighbourhood and, increasingly, for other clubs in Catalonia: the Màgics idea inspired the EQUALS category at the 3x3 Westfield Glòries tournament, where players with intellectual disabilities share the court with players without.

The season, in results

Two recent milestones that show how the team competes, not just that it takes part.

25-26 Catalan League · Runners-up Barna Màgics 52 – 47 Fedamar Joventut

A hard-fought game against Joventut that secured second place in the 25-26 Catalan League, on top of significant injury absences in the previous rounds.

What a training session is like

It looks far more like any other team's session than people imagine: warm-up, technical work, game situations and a scrimmage. They work on shooting mechanics, defensive positioning and the rules. What changes is the pace of progress and the way things are explained — not the standards or the respect.

When an adapted-sport team trains next to the under-14s or the under-16s, the children in the club grow up seeing it as the most normal thing in the world, because to them it is. No awareness talk is needed: sharing a sports hall for years is enough.

Who can take part

People with intellectual disabilities who want to play basketball, whatever their level. No experience needed: some arrive having never touched a ball. As with every other team in the club, the first day is a trial session with no commitment.
