Barna's development model: the science and Marc Gasol
Why Barna develops before it competes, why it does not sign a ten-year-old talent on the assumption that we already know who will go far, and why the same path was taken twenty years earlier by a former NBA player who now chairs an ACB club. A review of the scientific literature on youth sport development, set against Marc Gasol's project at Bàsquet Girona.
What the science says about drop-out
Drop-out does not cluster at 11, as is often repeated without citing a source: it clusters at 12.93 years on average, exactly at the move from under-14 to under-16. Every year around 30% of players leave at least one club. And what best predicts that someone carries on is not winning: it is enjoyment (r = 0.45), a far stronger predictor than sporting competence (r = 0.18). A club that retains through performance is pulling the weakest lever there is.
Basketball is also the sport with the highest reported levels of negative parental behaviour of all those analysed. And what does retain: 86% parental attendance at games among those who carry on playing, against 58% among those who have quit. It is not pressure that makes someone stay: it is presence.
What the science says about talent
Identifying the best players early does not work reliably: 92.8% of the junior elite and the senior elite are different people. In a Spanish sample of 1,368 regional selections, 50.3% were born in the first quarter of the year and only 6.8% in the fourth — the relative age effect, extreme in Spain. And early biological maturation predicts power, speed and agility, but not technical skill: selecting on physique between 10 and 13 is, to a large extent, selecting on date of birth.
The cheapest and best documented intervention
A workshop of 75 minutes to 2 hours of behavioural training for coaches cut drop-out from 26% to 5% in a controlled design (Barnett, Smoll and Smith, 1992). Three independent lines converge: the coach is the dimension that best predicts retention in Spanish sports centres; a caring climate beats any other predictor of youth outcomes; and in the SPLISS model, what sets Serbia and Lithuania apart is not the budget, it is coach education. The condition: training once is not enough — it has to be recurring, and what gets measured has to be the climate the players perceive, not the coaches' attendance on the course.
Marc Gasol: the same model, twenty years earlier
On 20 May 2014, Marc Gasol — still an active NBA player — founded a basketball school in Girona with no senior team at all. The first senior side did not arrive until 2017, three years later. The club reached the ACB in 2022, eight years after founding the school — with him on the court as player, owner and chairman at once. It is, point for point, the same sequence Barna follows: development first, competition later, without ever breaking the thread.
- 2014
Founds the school in Girona, with no senior team, with mayor Carles Puigdemont at the launch.
«We are starting with the greatest humility, with commitment, hard work and a method of our own.» - 2017
The first senior team arrives (EBA), three seasons after the school: the youth system as the starting point, the elite as the goal «but without rushing».
- 2019
After winning the World Cup with Spain: «What matters is inspiring young people to be good people», the most quoted formulation of his philosophy.
- 2021
Returns from the NBA, after 13 seasons and two rings, to play for his own club, in LEB Oro. The star drops a division for the project, not the other way round.
- 2022
Promotion to the ACB as player, owner and chairman, weeks after saying: «We are not going to rush to reach the ACB.»
- 2024
Retires as a player (20 seasons, one ring, two World Cups, two Olympic silvers). The chairman of the development project carries on.

The ten moves the science recommends
Eight of the ten cost nothing or next to nothing. None requires moving up a division. And none depends on winning.
| Move | Cost | Evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring relational training for coaches | Very low | Drop-out 5% vs. 26% |
| 10 min of neuromuscular warm-up, 2-3×/week | Zero | −36% ankle and knee injuries |
| Our own retention curve, by cohort and sex | Zero | Data not even the federation holds |
| Audit of date of birth and maturation | Very low | Corrects the 50.3% / 6.8% bias |
| Written policy on moving up an age group | Zero | Avoids the Força Lleida and Betis cases |
| Measure enjoyment and motivational climate, 2×/season | Low | The two best predictors of retention |
| Sport for mothers and fathers | Low | A stronger equalising lever than a grant |
What can be claimed and what cannot
What can be claimed: team sport behaves in the opposite way to individual sport on adolescent mental health (less anxiety, fewer depressive symptoms, less transgressive behaviour in girls). The social value of an active child is almost double that of an active adult. And the fabric of clubs is inherited capital, not reproducible: a club with sixty-one years of history in El Clot is not a replaceable service provider.
What cannot be claimed: that playing basketball causes integration, better school results or better mental health. The designs are mostly cross-sectional and the effects small. The defensible formulation, from Fred Coalter: sport is a necessary but not sufficient condition.
The two sentences that close the research
«Participation in sport is a necessary, but not sufficient condition.» — Fred Coalter, after eight years auditing the evidence on the social value of sport.
«Sport is a tool for education.» — Marc Gasol, explaining why his project started with a school and not with a first team.
Frequently asked questions
At what age do children most often quit basketball?
At 12.93 on average, at the move from under-14 to under-16 — not at 11, as is often repeated without a source. 30% leave at least one club every year.
Does spotting the best players very young work?
Not reliably: 92.8% of the junior elite and the senior elite are different people. Early maturation predicts physique, not technique.
What did Marc Gasol do at Bàsquet Girona?
He founded a school in 2014 with no senior team; the first senior side came in 2017 and the club reached the ACB in 2022, with him playing, owning and chairing it.
What does it have to do with CB Grup Barna?
For sixty-one years Barna has followed the same order: development first, competition later, inside the same organisation, from the Escoleta to the Super Copa senior team.
Internal working document based on a doctoral-scope literature review (11 lines of research, 900+ academic searches) and on a verified catalogue of Marc Gasol's public statements, 2014-2026. The five figures that circulate without a primary source are not cited here.

Frequently asked questions
At what age do children most often quit basketball?
The real average drop-out age is 12.93, at the move from under-14 to under-16 — not 11, as is often repeated without a source. Around 30% leave at least one club every year.
Does spotting the best players very young actually work?
Not reliably: 92.8% of junior and senior elite populations are different people. Early biological maturation predicts strength and speed, not technical skill, so selecting on physique at 10-13 is often selecting on date of birth.
What did Marc Gasol do at Bàsquet Girona?
He founded a basketball school in 2014 with no senior team at all; the first senior side did not arrive until 2017, three years later. He has explained it himself more than once: “we are not going to rush to reach the ACB” and “sport is a tool for education”. The club reached the ACB in 2022, eight years after the school was founded.
What does this have to do with CB Grup Barna?
For sixty-one years the Barna has followed the same order Marc Gasol chose for his project: development first, competition after, inside one single club and without ever breaking the thread between the Escoleta and the Super Copa senior team.
