The paradox, in one number
Of every 100 players developed in Barcelona, fewer than one goes on to compete at national level. 99.25% of the female talent the city develops disappears from the system. It is not lost at one particular stage: it evaporates gradually.
The first surprise is that size works against it. The bigger the city, the worse it converts:
- La Seu d'Urgell — 12,000 inhabitants, ~8 youth teams, 1 team in LF Endesa: 12,5%.
- Girona — 103,000 inhabitants, ~30 teams, 2 national-level teams: 6,7%.
- Mataró — 130,000 inhabitants, ~25 teams, 2 teams in LF2: 4%.
- Madrid — 3.5 million, 100+ teams, 21 national-level teams: ~4%.
- Barcelona — 1.6 million, 134 teams, 1 fragile team in LF Challenge: 0,75%.
Why it happens
There is no single culprit. There are five causes that feed one another.
Saturated facilities. In Barcelona the sports hall is the scarce resource. When hours run short, senior women's teams are the ones that end up in the 9.30pm slots, and court hire can reach €110,000 a year for a club. The bill always falls on the same people.
The LF2 rung is missing. A player who grows up in the city and for whom the regional level is no longer enough has nowhere to go without leaving. The ladder has a broken rung right in the middle.
Talent drain. A consequence of the above: Cornellà, Mataró and Girona take in players developed in Barcelona. The city develops talent it cannot keep.
Male-dominated governance. Across the 17 clubs analysed, 100% of the presidents are men. Decisions about schedules, budgets and priorities are made from a single perspective.
The shadow effect. The presence of a global club shapes the entire ecosystem, and agreements with the city's women's clubs have never quite taken hold.
What the paradox is not about
It is worth saying plainly: this is not a problem of talent, or of commitment, or of girls not wanting to play. With 134 youth teams, the raw material is all there. It is a problem of architecture: the system is designed in such a way that it loses along the way what it produces itself.
What can be done
The levers are well known and none is impossible: bring the LF2 rung back to the city, allocate court slots on an equity basis, provide specific funding for clubs with national-level women's representation or the potential for it, establish a stable calendar of women's events and support the technical training of the women who are already coaching.
The club has put this diagnosis to Barcelona City Council's sports department (February 2026) and to the Catalan Basketball Federation (March 2026), with a 2026-2030 framework of action for the city.
A case that proves it can be done
CB Grup Barna is today the number one women's basketball club in the city of Barcelona by licences — 250 female licences, a 6.61% share among 55 federated clubs — and sits in Catalonia's TOP 12 out of 411 clubs. Put another way: one in every fifteen women basketball players in Barcelona trains in the Clot.
Without being a big or a rich club. On a budget of €140,000-160,000 with half devoted to the women's game. The uncomfortable conclusion for the sector is that 50% does not ask for more money: it asks for what is already there to be shared out differently.
